The Nottoway County library system The Nottoway County library system has three public libraries. They are the Louis Spencer Epes Memorial Library in Blackstone, Crewe Community Library, and the Burkeville Library. They are guided by the Library Board and the Library Director, who oversees the day-to-day operation of the library system. The administrative office is located in the Crewe library. Piedmont Geriatric Hospital Piedmont Geriatric Hospital (PGH) is a 135-bed geropsychiatric hospital, operated by the Virginia Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services (DMHMRSAS). It is the only Virginia state facility that exclusively treats elderly persons (65+ years of age) who are in need of inpatient treatment for mental illness; meet the requirements for voluntary or involuntary admission as determined by their mental health center (CSB) and do not have a medical condition that requires priority treatment in an acute care hospital. The hospital has been accredited since 1985 by the national accrediting agency, The Joint Commission.

Virginia Southern Railroad The 75-mile Virginia Southern is a former Southern Railway operation which runs from Burkeville south to Oxford, NC. A Burkeville the VS connects to the main NS lines between Norfolk and Roanoke. (NS lines are shown in red at left.) Norfolk Southern leased the line to RailTex as part of a Thoroughbred Shortline Program spin-off in 1988. The line was once the Southern's line connecting Raleigh and Richmond. VS maintains an office in the former Southern Railway depot in Keysville.

Ward's Chapel United Methodist Church is located in Nottoway county, Virginia in the Jennings Ordinary settlement. The church was established prior to the beginning of the Civil War as was erected on land donated for that purpose by Nathan Ward's deed of October 4, 1952. Mr. Ward died December 23, 1853, and from the inscription on his marker it is fair to assume that the church had been erected before his death. The church was a simple white, clapboard structure comparable in size with most churches built during that period. It had two entrances, two aisles, and an overhead slave gallery at the rear.
